Thank you Frank! Sadly, I never thought of that - with both husband and wife out of the house, it very well could be placing a burden on the family; tragic.
I just downloaded Prentiss's book to my iPad. Sounds like a good read! Now I have to figure out why that name so familiar.

Thanks Michael; pray we will! Say hi to the family from the bunch of us. Your dad's a real special guy!

Frank, I was wondering if my parents "we don't want to be a burden" thought was eugenics-slipped-under-the-rug. It has been fed for so long, I see all of our kids' great-grandparents who are still living saying the same thing. The last thing any of them would be is a burden to us - besides, what a great way for our kids to learn that area of family dynamics and the passing on of information... So much lost... And you're sure right - the 1940's kids grew up to have smaller families and the country has continued down this road. There will be many, many lonely people in the decades to come. I would like to bless my parents by NOT having them choose between living facilities at some point, but it's like talking to the wall.

Frank, Penny - what could one do if they realize this, desiring to offer their aged parents this return to biblical family care, but the parents refused because they don't want "to be a burden"? We pray and they say it isn't necessary anymore to place such a burden on a family; they would not be a burden. The years seem to have whittled away at nearly every biblical guideline that concerns the family. I would love to think it is not all lost for my parents generation. Do you think it would be appropriate to draw an inference that this mentality is simply a long extension of eugenics-thought?

Mike from NY, for me it's either laugh or cry. At least I can laugh until it all unravels! . And while I meant it to be funny, really, when one holds any institution of such ungodly power as this one in such esteem, something really is wrong; they hold ungodliness and profess the same. I don't understand why Christians are ok with this administration...

Yes Joyce! it was indeed meant in good humor. It gets a little old to have someone as cleaver as Jim constantly peddling Obamacare (big oxymoron); and it's always kind of ironic to see him, correctly, advise one's removal from the RCC whilst supporting a government that does the same thing... I just don't get it. But the world would be a quieter, less humorous place without Jim Lincoln!

Jim, do you not see how alike our government and the RCC are?

Prayer to other-than-God vs. prayer to anyone BUT God
Sacraments turning to human flesh and blood vs. abortion champions
Bribes and indulgences vs. earmarks and estate/death taxes
Father Pope vs. the "divinity" of the current President
Pope Francis declaring "good" is simply following your own conscience vs. "don't worry, we'll tell you what's right and wrong"
White smoke from the Vatican vs. ObamaCare website (that's just funny! Although...)
Salvation through works vs. salvation through entitlement

You squabbled about the "bling pope" of Germany yet I've not heard one single rebuke of this administrations blatant and abusive use of tax-payers funds to jet-set around the world playing golf and shopping from you. People go hungry and you blame Christians for not doing more so "the government has to" while Mrs. First Lady has a garden with rotting food in it; still no remarks. The Bible commands us not to steal yet it's ok to force Christians to pay for ungodly medical practices and somehow that's not stealing? It's beginning to sound a little hypocritical to rag on John Y until you come out of your religion brother.

It's a big piece of God's heart and plans. To assume otherwise, it to place ourselves in the role of Creator.

Hey Christopher! Loooonnnggg before there were contraceptives, women still weren't the Duggers. Racheal, Leah, Sarah, Hannah, Mary the mother of Jesus, Ruth, Mrs. Noah - only a few kids. Come to think of it, apart from Eve, I can't think of anyone save Mrs. Job who had a passel of kids herself... I'm sure there's someone, but I can't think of them at the moment. I do know those women all prayed diligently for children. Some say it was to secure their standing in society, but according to Hannah's story, it was about the blessing of children; they are after all, a blessing, not a burden or curse. It is, as open said, God who is in control of this, not man. We fiddle and muddle stuff up - we use fertility treatments or contraceptives and play a role but I dare say we've overstepped our bounds and it isn't a role we are supposed to be in.

About the "what's in an egg": I would have the opinion that "Don’t you know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own", (1 Corinth 6:19). Otherwise you run into the fertility treatments where you can sell an egg - if it's just an egg, not fertilized, then so what? Problem is, it is "the seed" and when you start looking up "the seed" in the Bible... Well, it's a big pie

My mistake, sorry! I had thought in a different topic there were questions from the UK about who PP was. Thanks for the correction; sorry to know it though.

Stu, I don't think they have PP in England; right Lisa? However, it's this wretched feminism that's birthed Planned Parenthood and the ideas behind "freedom" for women. Sadly, it has parted us from God's place for women and made that role offensive, breeding discontentment and a terrible arrogance against God's plan for man and woman. It's drawn us to believe there is God's will outside the home fires that will give us contentment; birth control that will give us "only what we can handle"; and marriages that make sure we are getting our fair share. Womankind has by-in-large, removed our freedoms and replaced them with conceit and shallow-believism. We rob ourselves of the peace that passes all understanding.

"Every wise woman builds her house, but a foolish one tears it down with her own hands." (Proverbs 14:1).

I have a very mature, biblical comment for this: gross, really, really gross... Common cups in a family, sure. Common cup in a revolving congregation? Maybe not so much; hence, the problem at hand.

Ok, now wait a minute here folks! Lisa, are you saying the OT is useless? There was no "law" sited in these OT texts - that's another discussion anyway. The OT is just as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago! Back to the topic, there are many, many things the Bible doesn't address - brushing our teeth, sports activities, airplanes, computers - but it fails in absolutely NO AREA to guide us in real terms of how we are to conduct ourselves. So while the Bible may not say, "thou shalt not use contraceptives" the question is much bigger - who should control reproduction. To whittle down a subject to a "finer point" is the best way to wriggle out of truth. Kids do it all the time, "Mom said we couldn't have a cookie; but she didn't say we couldn't have two!" I would challenge us to not pick at the crumbs then but look at the whole pie - this isn't about birth control - it is about reproduction as a whole. As a Christian, do we have the right to impose on God our own knowledge and understanding when it comes to childbearing? I believe the Bible is as clear as day on this and only through discarding bits and pieces of the Bible, here and there, can one come to the conclusion that God is silent on this topic. He is most certainly not. His regard for children, from

Lisa, I hope most of your conclusions result less from Christian friends and more from Christ's word. My husband and I grabbed a concordance, looked up children, childbearing, and womb. It didn't take long to get the drift of the message. Afterwards, we looked up fruitful. The blessings and curses are clear and distinctive. Had I asked my friends, however, I would have received kindly but unscriptural advice - more "well, I think" or "what's worked for me" or "I just think a lot of this is cultural". The Bible transcends cultural differences and brings us all into one body, albeit, a diverse one. Yet, the Word of God is interested in God's will only. Our joy is in allowing Him to align us to His will where we might find peace and true happiness. I'll be praying for God to lead you as He will!

"Don't you know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body." (1 Corinthians 6:19, 20)

"and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me." (Galatians 2:20)

"For Adam was created first, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and transgressed. But she will be saved through childbearing, if she continues in faith, love, and holiness, with good judgment." (1 Timothy 2:13-15)

"Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship." (Romans 12:1)

"Then Jesus told them, 'Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.' And they were amazed at Him." (Mark 12:17)

So, to whom does your body, including any reproductive rights belong to, speaking as a Christian?

But we are called to be discerning with the responsibilities God has given us and not throw pearls to swine. There is nothing kind about helping lazy people who have an entitlement mentality. There is everything kind and good in helping those who are truly in need and not abusing God's good graces.

"I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing. You yourselves know that these hands have provided for my needs and for those who were with me. In every way I’ve shown you that by laboring like this, it is necessary to help the weak and to keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus, for He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” (Acts 20:33-35 HCSB)

Jim, seriously? My seven year old even knows better than to make the "Well, the Bible doesn't talk about toilet paper and airplanes" comment. The Bible is a code of conduct, given as command, instructions, rebukes and exhortations to strive to do GOD'S will and not my own. The government was given a role and that role outlined in Exodus. SJ already addressed your twisting of the good Samaratin who performed out of love and not coercion; reread the story. And Dorothy and you stooping to the level of "hard hearted" and "you may think it is Biblical to let people die along the roadside": 1 Timothy 5:8, Prov 26:15,16; 20:4; 22:13; 20:4; 18:9; 31:27; 13:2; 21:25-26; Ecclesiastes 11:4; 1 Corinthians 4:2; Romans 12:11; 2 Timothy 3:10; Matthew 25:26-30; Hebrews 6:12; Ephesians 5:15-16. (That took forever to type.)

They are absurd arguments and reveal little more than a strangely humanistic view in sheep's clothing. Take a look at Ruth's story - even in her misery and poverty, she still had to WORK yet was shown great care and mercy through Boaz. I have never met a Christian who wanted people to die on the road side and passed by like the hard hearted Pharasies. (Cont...)

Jim, SOME people want universal healthcare. Those people with a biblical worldview, however, tend to be repulsed by the fact that we are forced to pay for others who may not fall under the biblical guidelines of needing care while these same Christians struggle to take care of and pay for their own families in a BIBLICAL way. I, for one, DO NOT want universal (stealing) healthcare. There is absolutely zero biblical backup for mandatory/ forced healthcare in the Bible.

Just as an FYI, in Glendive, Montana, there is a great dino museum and the director is a young earth Creationist. He's done a number of video interviews with Ham and Davis and others. It's a pretty great place if you're in this neck of the woods!

Also, there's a mountain in western Montana called Black Butte. It's only accessible for maybe two months out of the year because it's so high and there's always snow there. But for the intrepid mountaineer, you can climb it and find tropical fossils - shells, plants, fish galore! Now how else would they have gotten there...? Our kids LOVE the Johnathan Park series and I have to admit my husband and I learned a lot (and were entertained) by listening to these radio drama's in regards to how the flood of Noah is where we find our fossil record. Great tool for those just wanting to learn more about all the pieces of the great flood, along with their kids.
