As we commence with chapter 3, the inspired apostle turns his focus on those things which were heavy on his heart and mind. These are the things which he desires to have a strong impact on them (and us). In general, there are two major themes: 1) steadfastness in the pure doctrine which he has taught them and, 2) living a life of peace and contentment. Regarding the pure doctrine, Paul insists that the fundamentals of the faith are non-negotiable and that the church should maintain them in spite of the pressure to compromise or change. Regarding living a life of peace and contentment, Paul would have the orthodoxy of doctrine be shown in a thought life which is focused on the blessings and benefits of redemption (instead of the negatives which are always creeping into our thought-life), and also in a Christ-like behavior toward one another. That is, unity in (orthodox) doctrine should lead to unity with other likeminded believers.
