Much of the teaching in I Peter is instruction on how to live as a Christian in a fallen world. Peter sought both to encourage us and to warn us. He also tried to prepare us for the cost of living as a Christian when we meet opposition. Now, as we draw close to the end of Peter's letter, he has some final exhortations and they are more focused upon the life of the Christian in and with the community of believers called, "the flock of God" in verse 2. In those first four verses of chapter 5, his concern was for his fellow elders and that they acknowledge that the flock belongs to the Chief Shepherd. The apostle now turns his attention more to the flock. There are six actions and attitudes he requires of the flock between verses 5 and 9: 1) submission, 2) humility, 3) contentment, 4) sobriety, 5) vigilance, and 6) resistance. This is a formidable list! But like the elders, we must all keep our eyes on Christ.
