In the exposition of the Apostle's Creed, our confession answers the simple question: "Why was He buried?" with the simple answer: "To show thereby that He was really dead." The simplicity of the question and the answer should not deceive you into thinking that the doctrine expressed is simplistic. For underlying this question and answer is a profound and indispensable doctrine. The historical fact of the humiliation of Christ culminating in his gruesome death by crucifixion and His subsequent burial are necessary for our forgiveness and redemption. If He did not truly rise again "…then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty…. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!" (I Cor. 15:14, 17) That is, without His death and resurrection there is no gospel and no hope. But on this Palm Sunday, with the Apostle Paul we glory, "…in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world." (Gal. 6:14) By the death and resurrection of the Innocent One, salvation has come! – Pastor Schlegel
