Over time, even the most well-intentioned tradition can suffer from a loss of the originally intended meaning and significance. This is true in every sphere of life: civic, religious, and family. There is a long tradition of setting aside a day this week as "Thanksgiving Day." In reality, it has become more than that; it has become "Thanksgiving Week" along with "Black Friday" and more football than even the most ardent fan can consume. That is, the original intent and significance is obscured. But there is no other way in which the intent has been more obscured than by giving thanks to no one in particular (and certainly not the Lord of Heaven and Earth) but merely giving thanks as though the wonderful blessings we have come by mere happenstance. Psalm 147 challenges us to give thanks to our God for specific reasons: because it is right and because He has blessed us.
