The Gospel According To John July 31, 2011 Sermon Lesson 45 John 9:1-7 Healing of the Man Born Blind Part I—The Miracle
Because Jesus is the Light of the world, we need for Him to illumine us… To recognize our own spiritual “blindness” (1) Total inability (1) Total incurability (1, 32) To understand God's purpose in calamity (2-3) The disciples wanted to know the “cause” (2) Jesus wanted them to know the “purpose”(3) To enable others to see Jesus as the Light of the world (4-7) Urgency for the work of God (4-5) Unlikely means of healing (6) Faith in the unseen Christ (7) Sin and Suffering Generally speaking, sin and suffering are always connected. (Gen 2:16) Individual sin may also cause suffering. (Jn 5:14b) But, suffering may not be caused by our own sin at all. (2 Co 12:7-8) Regardless, God is sovereign over all calamity. (Ex 3:11) Rather than looking for the cause of suffering, we need to look for its purpose—the display of the works of God! (Jn 9:3b) Applications May God enable us to see our own blindness. May God enable us to understand His purpose in calamity. May God enable us to see and proclaim Jesus as the light of the world.
