We come now to the second of the seven signs that the apostle John recorded in his gospel account of the life and ministry of Jesus. This one occurred in the same place as the previous one, in Cana of Galilee. This is a healing miracle, but it is unique in that Jesus was not actually present with the person who was sick. Now, in the sermon today I will highlight the setting for the miracle, which is important because we will see the Lord's interaction with a person who requests the healing. From there I will highlight the development of faith in this man, which is really at the heart of the story, for his faith in Jesus' word stands in stark contrast to the prevailing desire for a tangible miracle. And then we will consider the significance of this sign, especially in terms of lessons for our lives in the modern world. We are not unlike those in the ancient world who “refused to believe unless they were given a sign.” So once again it is my prayer that God will be pleased to bless His word preached as we continue our study of these fascinating miracles of Jesus.
