Jesus Christ came to save His people from their sins; but what is sin? To understand and appreciate this great salvation we must be aware of what we are saved from. Sin is defined by the law, and our understanding of the gospel hinges upon our understanding of the law and sin. John Bunyan said, "he that is dark [lacking understanding] as touching the scope, intent, and nature of the law, is also dark as to the scope, nature, and glory of the Gospel; and also he that hath but a notion of the one, will barely have any more than a notion of the other." The Spirit of God awakens His people to the spiritual nature of the law and the exceeding sinfulness of sin so that they, cognizant of their desperate condition, would cry out for God's grace in the gospel. |
