Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 11:24

“There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that witholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.” Proverbs 11:24

God’s wisdom is a paradox to our natural minds. This is why so many stumble at the word of God. It just doesn’t make sense. Some of our hymns celebrate these paradoxes. “He plunged me to victory,” a fountain filled with blood that removes stains – how does this possibly make sense? Scripture also abounds with the seemingly illogical – strength made perfect (complete) through weakness? Humble yourself in order to be exalted? Our rational minds scream against this sort of nonsense. Oh, the beauty of the light of salvation. Things that are complete unappealing and irrational become desirable and rational. So it is with the principle of this verse? What is the best way to guarantee wealth? The easy answer is hold on to wealth with everything you have. Protect your investments, save every dollar, make sure you always come out ahead in every deal. While there is certainly a responsibility to be good stewards and spend wisely, this Scripture runs counter to the self-consumed approach to wealth. God says that those who scatter, those who use their wealth to bless others in need, increase, while those who fiercely and even unjustly hold on to their possessions, lose them. This is often true financially, but it is always true spiritually. Those who value treasures in heaven are far more wealthy than those who value treasures on earth. Those who treasure material things are generally the most anxious, unhappy, nervous people, while the richest people in terms of respect, joy, and impact on others are those who are most generous. On a personal note, it has always given me great pleasure to observe my father’s approach towards money. Today is his 72nd birthday, so I joyfully praise his blessing in my life. My father has never had much in terms of material possession. Yet, he is one of the most eager, joyful givers that I have ever witnessed. He takes immense pleasure out of being able to offer a few dollars in support of those in need. On several occasions, when I would have a medical bill or car repair, he would joyfully offer me support even though I had a larger income. He knows what it is to lay up treasures in heaven.
