Australia's most controversial Catholic priest has resigned after being accused of heresy by the Vatican.
In recent years, Father Paul Collins has been highly critical of what he sees as the centralised and hierarchical nature of the Catholic Church under the present Pope, John Paul II.
His book, Papal Power, published three years ago, caused deep anger in Rome.
Father Collins says he feels the Catholic church's leadership has become increasingly dictatorial and authoritarian.
