This resolution of Daily United Prayer is based on An Humble Attempt, originally put forward by Jonathan Edwards in 1748. Its design is to encourage God's people in the duty of united extraordinary prayer; setting aside some time every day to pray for the revival of His church and the advancement of Christ's kingdom in our homes, in our churches, in our nation, and in the world.
"And he sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God: and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him to prosper." 2 Chronicles 26:5.
I've been thinking about this verse a great deal this morning. It does not say simply that Zechariah was a prophet. The Holy Spirit records that Zechariah had "understanding in the visions of God." It's not enough merely to possess the office of a prophet. It's not merely a multiplication of preachers that we need. Zechariah was a prophet, yes, but he had understanding in the visions of God. The revelation of God. Indeed, the very Word of God. We need men of "understanding" like the children of Issachar that had "understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do." 1 Chron 12:32. And what should be the net result of such understanding? In Zechariah's case, it drove Uzziah to seek the Lord. It drove Uzziah to a life of prayer. I wish every faithful preacher and pastor would meditate deeply on the truth found in this one verse. When we communicate God's revealed Word, do we MOVE the hearers to seek God? Or is it just like so much information that tickles our ears for a moment but doesn't affect our hearts? This godly man Zechariah had understanding in the visions of God and it INFLUENCED the young king Uzziah to a life of prayer. Because "as long as he sought the Lord, God made him to prosper."
