This resolution of Daily United Prayer is based on An Humble Attempt, originally put forward by Jonathan Edwards in 1748. Its design is to encourage God's people in the duty of united extraordinary prayer; setting aside some time every day to pray for the revival of His church and the advancement of Christ's kingdom in our homes, in our churches, in our nation, and in the world.
Rick brought a very needed exhortation yesterday. It was a blessing to me because it is far too easy to become so accustomed to the insanity of where we are in the world today that we are like a slumbering man who is jolted out of sleep briefly with the momentary headline of shocking depravity and sin only to be lulled back to sleep. Make no mistake about it, friends. "The whole world lieth in wickedness." 1 John 5:19. Sometimes it takes a North Korean defector to talk some sense into where we are today. Of course, it's what faithful Christians have been saying and feeling all along, but nobody is listening.
Even our home town of Greenville SC is not immune to the wickedness taking over the world. And when it enters into the front door of our own homes and members of our own families, what are we to do then? We are to finally wake up and get desperate. And we need to encourage each other to not grow hardened and faithless. A praying participant shared with me this most helpful passage today:
"Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation." Hebrews 3:12-15.
Do you see the repeated emphasis? The Scripture teaches us that we must "stir up ourselves" but there's also a sense where we need the Lord to awaken us. The deceit, slumber, and abject apathy overtaking the church is astonishing. We will not awaken. We will not be stirred to pray. What is wrong with us?
