The Christian tradition to which Iâve belonged most of my lifeâthe Reformed tradition of Protestantismâis not famous for its contributions to the western musical canon. But it is famous for its hymns and hymn-singing. The Lutherans have Bach; the Catholics have Monteverdi and Mozart and many others; the Reformed have . . . Louis Bourgeois. He compiled and composed hundreds of fine hymn tunes in Geneva during the 1540s, including âOld 100th,â to which many Protestant congregations sing the âdoxology.â
The great majority of the Anglophone worldâs best hymns have emerged from the Reformed traditionâeither from Presbyterianism or the evangelical side of Anglicanism. While the rest of 18th-century Europe was awash in ideas of the Enlightenment, the Reformed in Britain, Ireland and North America wrote hymns. The hymns of Isaac Watts and John Newton, John and Charles Wesley, and William Cowper are models...

Breakfast was dreadful. Bacon was bland, beans bland, toast poor. I'm running out of ideas.
But yes, the spiritual food is more important, and thankfully is not genetically modified, so long as you keep to the KJV or similar.

I think I know what you mean bro. Over here, since the 60's, some Anglican churches had left their orthodoxy in favour of a mild version of charismatic, introducing a simple group of musicians comprising perhaps keyboards, acoustic guitar and drums, and singing the latest repetitive nonsense, relaxing on the formal appearance, appealing to younger people, departing from truth, and so on. Their big thing was to divide Christians into two camps: those who have, and those who have not. Have not what? The baptism with the Holy Spirit. What a big deception! Clever dicky devil made mincemeat of them.
Ah, now breakfast. I wondered why my tummy was a rumbling. Today I have a speciality: bacon medallions, baked beans, and two slices of wholemeal toast. Wow!

Mystery to me.

Good morning to you Remo, and may the Lord fill you to overflowing, that you may say, "My cup runneth over."
It's a fact that since the first psalm was written under the inspiration of God, psalms have been sung in the worship of God, and still are being used today, in keeping with NT instruction, in a variety of churches, especially since the Reformation restored this to the church.
Unfortunately, some churches have made the worship of God too highbrow, putting worship beyond the reach of the common man. The Anglicans especially are guilty of this, because although their psalm singing is most beautiful, being set in plainsong, the ordinary man cannot sing them.

At present, sadly, this discussion about good solid devotional and doctrinal hymns versus the repetitive vacuous doctrinally empty 7/11 rock style choruses popular in most professed evangelical churches today, is rather academic since any singing in churches is illegal in many places at present, even if they are wearing masks!!
I watched two lovely services yesterday, which had a present congregation, which were totally live, for the spoken parts and had recorded hymns with congregation and organ, from pre-COVID 19 lockdown services. The cameraman in this church never films the congregation anyway, but only the pastor. This is just as well, as the fully masked congregation, (mandated by the church, not the government, though they recommend it), are still not allowed to sing, (that is a government order), and are given a paper hymn sheet, which they read silently, while the recorded hymns are being sung, and then take hone with them afterwards!!!
Our problem in American Christianity is that since the late forties, the American church has sought to change itself into a secular church. They ditch bible translations, for a easier more updated translation. Dumb it down to people who cannot or will not read. Our hymnals are gone. Enter a church and their in the back room hidden away. Too make matters most grievous is the changes to my own denomination is ( SBC) about to take on a mega earthquake. Under the guidance of Southern Seminary in Louisville Kentucky and with southwestern seminary in Fort Worth, the desire to stop people leaving the denomination and for baptisms to increase, the SBC re elected J D Greer. The aw shucks, raise your iPhone if â youâve decided to follow Jesus â. JD was re-elected after broadening the tent for folks who act and look like they donât care about heaven or hell. His coy , left tipping, leadership will finally cause a well deserved split. Hopefully itâll be live on a zoom cast so when that unshaven mug of his watches over half the messengers leave heâll act like the king singing â youâll be backâ out of Hamilton.

At the height of the Worship Wars, critics complained about the â7/11 chorus,â brief lyrical sentiments that seemed to feature seven words repeated 11 times. Yes, the snarky insult was also a deliberate allusion to a convenience store. Critics wondered if the lyrical and musical content was the equivalent of fast food rather than a substantive meal....

It has occurred to me that I don't think I like any music that was written after 1920 oh, there might be a few hymns the past 200 year test but there are few and far between. As much as the as the author of the above thinks the above is no longer true there are still plenty of examples that are around âđđ
It wouldn't hurt if singers and instrument players did a little more practice no matter what the vintage of the music is also.
