Mark Driscoll Launches The Trinity Church
The controversial former pastor of Seattle’s Mars Hill Church officially opened a new church in Arizona on Sunday.

Mark Driscoll’s name is now on The Trinity Church in Scottsdale. He preached two sermons Sunday morning focusing on the Biblical stories of Jonah.

"We tend to think if things go well it's from the Lord and if things are hard it must be from Satan. Let me [tell you] sometimes hard things come from God,” Driscoll said in his sermon, which was broadcasted publically on the church’s website. “Sometimes God will allow us to endure hardship for two reasons: to change who we are and where we are.”

Driscoll left Seattle after multiple allegations of wrongdoing, including that he bullied people within the church. A lawsuit followed with accusations of misuse of funds. Driscoll has called those false and malicious allegations without any merit. ...

I would add one more to the list lack of financial transparency in hiding pastor's salaries

Dr. James Emery White wrote:
What is a cult of personality?

It’s when a person becomes the center of attention rather than Christ; an individual looms larger than a mission; a figure is given more status than the organization itself.

... consider the following ten signs, in no particular order, of a cult of personality at work in a local church:

1. The demand for special treatment, special honor, special recognition....

2. The website is focused on an individual. A person’s quotes, their picture....

3. No one is allowed to question the leader without retribution....

4. If the leader were to leave, die, or fall into scandal...the entire enterprise would collapse....

5. The line between “look at what God is doing” and “look at what our leader is doing” is almost non-existent....

6. The name of the leader and the name of the church are inseparable....

7. Image is paramount......

8. There is no sense of team leadership,...

9. The person travels in an entourage.

10.Their speaking/teaching often revolves around themselves....

Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra wrote:
In the end, Mars Hill’s final announcement wasn’t optimistic enough. Counting previous campuses and new plants, the megachurch gave way to 15 new churches, not 11. And even though the collapse of Mars Hill left hundreds hurting and soured on the idea of belonging to a church, it also sparked a wave of healthy soul-searching and a realignment of churches with the gospel.

The story is that Jesus’s church isn’t dependent on any one man,” Sinnett said. “It’s dependent on the risen Savior, who is a mighty God who grows and expands his kingdom through weakness and humility and the preaching of a crucified Savior. He isn’t hindered by a fallen pastor or an imperfect leader or imploded megachurches.”

The above is an interesting and lengthy article.

Mark Driscoll left a lot to be desired. Since he just seemed to have turned his back on the Seattle fiasco he may still leave a lot to be desired.

The Bible verses for Mark -- and his kind!

1 Corinthians 5:9-13
I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. Purge the evil person from among you. ---ESV

If Driscoll is still up to his old tricks, q.v., ]] (The Mark Driscoll Controversy), pity the new people he's misleading.

As this article ]] (Understanding the New Calvinism: More Identifying Marks) moves towards its middle, you will find more interesting descriptions of Mr. Driscoll.

Frank, this has nothing to do with 9 marks, this is scriptural principle confirmed through church history. No scripture and little historical backing that would support no church discipline. This really isn't even a debated issue (Matt 18; 1 Cor 5) and many other passages leave no option if we want to be faithful to the Word

Frank you make a good point. I would also suggest one stay away from churches that follow, ]] (Ten Rules to Revival or Ruination? -- “How to Develop a Cult Mentality in Your Congregation”) .

WFP is quite correct about ]] (Grunge Christianity?) as you are Frank, about ]]Christian Cults

So, ]] (When Should People Leave Their Church?) and ]] (What should I look for when choosing a new church home?)

The 9 Mark churches are ones that I would stay away from. Terminating membership is so difficult and divisive that I equate it to cult-like churches. The below is an excerpt from one of their leaders on terminating membership. There was much more to the article, but the below is simply an excerpt that is not taken out of context.

“Churches’ governing documents (constitution, by-laws) should reflect the fact that individual members do not have the unilateral right to terminate their membership.

Instead, that prerogative belongs to the church. Therefore, the church has the right to refuse someone’s resignation and pursue discipline instead. It’s important to have this clearly stated in a church’s documents for both pastoral and legal reasons.”

It's hard to rejoice in something that is not being affirmed or overseen by any other qualified pastors. Church planting 101: don't plant a lone-ranger church, God doesn't like that, and it's not biblical.

One thing Driscoll can't deny is his own godless and blasphemous words found in his books and sermons which prove he is not fit to pastor any church! He needs to be saved! He needs to repent! And until he does that, he should be avoided as the false teacher he is.

Someone mentioned it wouldn't be long before he popped up somewhere else, new church - more chaos, more dishonouring the Lord.
