Food Rationing Confronts Breadbasket of the World
Major retailers in New York, in areas of New England, and on the West Coast are limiting purchases of flour, rice, and cooking oil as demand outstrips supply. There are also anecdotal reports that some consumers are hoarding grain stocks.

At a Costco Warehouse in Mountain View, Calif., yesterday, shoppers grew frustrated and occasionally uttered expletives as they searched in vain for the large sacks of rice they usually buy.

Yeah, I still remember that 90-day
price-freeze--and the time when he
(Nixon) turned the clocks ahead 2-hours
in a vane attempt to save energy.

Those were WEIRD times indeed, just
prior to Nixon's downfall.

Indeed we do have smart and Final stores in Phoenix and surrounding cities.

I have seen no problems getting any foods I want when I want. Could this be a vast left wing conspiracy to terrify the poor and ignorant and bring in the new era of the nanny state? Only the government can give you rice now, so shut up and vote for Barracks-O-Bomber.....and give us your paycheck, because another illegal needs some dyalisys.

"In the US, it is called rationing if you can't find a 50 lb sack of rice, and are forced to settle for a 10 lb bag"

LOL I thought that was a fast Mike?

This is new to me.

All I've heard about until now is how the
drive to increase ethanol production is
cutting into the world supply of corn.

What we can't get at Costco (here in the
SF Bay Area) we can usually find at a
place called "Smart and Final". Don't
know if they have any stores in Arizona
or New York.

It is common for us to have trouble finding desirable food items at Costco & elsewhere. Our standing joke is: If we like it, Costco will cease stocking it.

But I don't blame them. They have a business to run & the right to sell whatever they like at whatever price; it's better to have an erratic free market than a planned one which almost guarantees shortages (yes, to some extent we have a planned economy, but not totally so). Roll with the punches & be grateful for what else is available. It could be a lot worse.
