U.S. Marine Chopper Down in Kuwait; First Coalition Casualties Reported
WASHINGTON — A U.S. Marine helicopter carrying 12 British and 4 U.S. soldiers crashed in Kuwait, killing everyone on board, the Pentagon said.
The crew 16 Americans and Britons were the first coalition casualties of the one-day-long invasion of Iraq. The helicopter was assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.
U.S. military officials said they did not have further details about the crash.
The CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter vehicle went down at 7:37 p.m. EST on the Kuwaiti side about 9 miles from the border with Iraq, military officials said. The cause of the crash is under investigation, the officials said, adding that hostile fire had not been reported in the area.
