Joseph wrote: I was asking for scriptural proof for sola scriptura. Can you give me any? Paul rather tells us to "stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle." (2 Thessalonians 2:15) I do believe that Christians from all denominations form the body of Christ. At the end of 1 Peter, he says that those in "Babylon" greet you. Was Peter in Babylon? I doubt it. Babylon was a code name for Rome. I don't think that there is any evidence that Peter was in Babylon, but there are tons of writings that say that Peter was in Rome. But as you can imagine there were persecutions--Peter probably wanted to keep a low profile. http://catholic.com/library/Papal_Infallibility.asp Scroll down to "Peter not infallible?" I am not putting confidence in man, I am putting confidence in the Church that Christ said would never be prevailed against in Matthew 16:18! He gave it divine authority. Nothing like good ole Gesu-ite teaching to explain the scriptures away, eh, Joseph? |

"Can you back that up with Scripture?"Sure. Matthew 13:24-30: The wheat are true believers, the tares are professing believers that look like true believers. They are all in the same field(professing to be the church)They will be sorted on Judgment Day, and the tares will be burned. All born again believers are sealed by the Holy Spirit(Eph.1:13) unto the day of redemption, regardless of denomination they belong to, and the Bible calls them "saints". There is no other use of the word saint in New Testament Scripture. I think you'll find it very interesting, that when the apostle Paul wrote to the Romans, he addressed them as "all that be in Rome, called to be saints". Hmmm. It seems that if there were an established church at Rome, and if it was the one true church, Paul would have said so? Likewise, Peter wrote 2 epistles and made no mention of an established church at Rome that he was the head of,(and what's really amazing is Paul had to openly rebuke Peter for teaching false doctrine-Galatians 2. How's that for a pope?) but did talk about being born again and kept by God. "The Bible is not the absolute basis of authority and truth, the Church is." Psalm 118:8 "It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man." |

Kevin, you can not read the Holy Bible without evidence of a triune God all throughout. To say that this was an invented church system doctrine is nonsense. The KJV rendering of 1John5:7 is one of the only verses that describe in detail of one God three persons. We have the manuscript evidence for the verse, so the only way we can verify is with other scripture. Certainly we see the trinity of the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost, in Matthew 3:16-17, Mark 1:10-11, Luke 3:21-22, the first chapter of John, and many other verses, but even in the very first verses of Genesis do we see the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost. So no matter whether any "fathers"(and Jesus says to give no man the spiritual title of father-- Matthew 23:9)quoted it or not, the fact is that we have manuscript evidence, so we must compare scripture to scripture, and the case for this verse being in the Bible is overwhelming. Psalm 12:6-7 "The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever." Psalm 118:8 "It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man." |
