The first petition of the Lord’s Prayer is Hallowed be Thy Name. In the first petition we pray that God would by his Grace enable and incline us and others to know, acknowledge, and highly esteem him, his titles, attributes, ordinances, word, works, and to glorify him in thought, word and deed. We also ask that God may remove atheism, ignorance, idolatry, profaneness, and whatsoever is dishonoring to his name.
In this prayer we make three acknowledgements or requests. The first is an acknowledgement that we do not revere him as we ought. In the second case we express our desire to bring fitting glory to his name. Thirdly, we desire that others honor him aright. The Lord is jealous for his own name and glory; he declares his name to be holy and worth of honor.
