The text tells us that she was beautiful in both form and face, so beautiful that she was taken into the harem of the King of Persia when all the 'beautiful young virgins' were taken for the kings pleasure.
We are told that, like Daniel and his three Hebrew friends, Esther found favour in the eyes of the kings servants. But there seems to be a flaw in Esther that we don't find in Daniel. While Daniel determined not to defile himself, Esther determined not to be discovered to be a Jewess, which would have led to eating forbidden foods, neglecting covenant faithfulness and even submitting to be the consort of a gentile king.
Esther and Mordecai present strange heroes in this second chapter of Esther, but after all, this is a story about providence. And we see the hand of providence moving even among the flawed lives of unlikely people.
