September 24, 2017 Sermon Lesson 45 Hebrews 12:4-11
Suffering for the Sake of Discipline
Main Idea: We must endure suffering for the sake of God’s discipline!
Discipline—a definition: Providing guidance for responsible living—training and instruction (positive), achieved by reproof and correction (negative)
• We have not yet suffered death (4)
• God disciplines those whom He loves (5-6) It is our sovereign God who disciplines (5-6) It is those whom He loves who are disciplined (5-6) Chiasm (Prov 3:12 and Heb 12:6): A Whom the Lord loves, B He disciplines B‘ And He chastises every son A’ Whom He accepts
• God treats us as sons (7-8) Every son is disciplined by his father If you aren’t disciplined, you aren’t a son!
• Discipline is good (9-10) We respected our fathers for disciplining us (9) Much more should we respect God for disciplining us (9) Our fathers were less than perfect and limited in time (10) God disciplines us to share His holiness (10) Short-term pain, long-term gain (11) God’s discipline yields peaceful fruit of righteousness (11)
Applications Know that God is sovereign—even over your discipline! Rejoice in your divinely designed calamities—they are His plan for your good! Endure those calamities—somehow they come from His loving hand! Don’t give up!
