David's family were gathered to him in Moab. The prophet Gad tells David to return to Judah. Saul hears about David and claims that his people, and his son, and David are all conspiring against him. Doeg speaks up and tells Saul that he saw David with the priests. He tells enough truth but also embellishes the story by stating that the priest "enquired of the Lord" for David. This is how the hirelings deceive by giving enough truth mixed in with the lies.
When Saul demands that the priests appear before him, he commands his servants to kill the priests. They refuse, so Saul turns to Doeg who kills all of them save one. This heinous act also fulfills the prophecy against Eli in chapter 2 of First Samuel. The Bible shows that it is right to disobey an unlawful order but there will always be a hireling to do the bidding of the wicked.
