Herod Antipas was the son of Herod the Great. There are a number of Herod's in the Bible and they were not Jews but they were Edomites. He is one of the three sons of Herod the Great. But when Herod heard of Christ and his works we read in Luke chapter 9 of a most remarkable and striking reaction. It wasn't a reaction of anticipation or a reaction of joy that the Son of God had condescended to visit this world and be a Saviour. Rather was it a reaction of fear. We are told in Luke 9:7 'Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;' After Herod Antipas met John the Baptist his life was never going to be the same again. This poor skin clad prophet from the wilderness was going to change Herod's life. This was a crisis point and a turning point in the life of Herod Antipas. We might even go as far as to say that to all outward appearances that it was on the meeting of Herod with John the Baptist lay Herod's souls destiny for that is certainly the way it turned out. Herod was certainly ever afterwards haunted and plagued by the events that ensued from his meeting with the man of God for Herod instead of listening to what the man of God had to say and instead of turning fully to God he took the wrong course.
