My first exposure to Martin Luther was as a sophomore in high school. My world history book dedicated exactly one paragraph to explaining who Luther was and the Protestant Reformation that was begun under his leadership. But many chapters were committed to the cultural advancements made under the Renaissance. The recovery of the sole authority of Scripture and the gospel of Jesus Christ and His Apostles was relegated for all intents and purposes to a footnote not worthy of much more than to be mentioned in passing. In our text we learn of the family of Cain who were well known for their contributions to the advancement of culture, yet there is a deafening silence about them knowing and serving Jehovah. The record of Seth's family, however, is altogether silent concerning their contributions to literature, science, and the arts, but they are remembered for the revival of Jehovah's worship in their days. In Cain we have the secular humanism of the Renaissance, but in Seth we find the far more glorious Reformation! What is highly esteemed among men is an abomination to God, and what is hated by the world is His instrument to glorify Himself!
