How is anyone saved? By the works of the Law or by hearing with faith? This question underlies the points being made by the apostle Paul in answer the question of how anyone can be righteous before a holy God? In so doing he brings the whole of the revealed Word of God to bear in answering. He is making very clear that any and every effort to keep the Law always results in condemnation not justification because no one can keep it perfectly. God is holy and perfect as is His standard of righteousness. The purpose of the Law was to reveal that perfect standard and the sinful and hopeless condition of man so the need for a Savior would be realized. All efforts to be self-righteous or to add requirements to the Gospel by which God saves is to nullify the power of the Gospel to save. Any drift away from devotion to, and dependence on, the Word of God to living by the Law instead of living by faith as a way of maintaining righteousness is likewise defection from God and His Word.
