My favorite picture of the New Testament pastor is the shepherd. That's even the Greek term that underlies our word "pastor." A shepherd is called to lead, feed, clean, doctor and protect his Master's flock. He must serve the flock in sincerity, without greed and proving to be an example of godliness. Perhaps especially in times of trials and suffering. The Apostle Peter has three important words to men who lead the church in trying times: i.) a motivating word of appeal (v.1); a clarifying word of contrast (vv.2-3); a fortifying word of promise (v.4). If the shepherd goes astray, what will become of the sheep?
