Jesus asks impossible things of his disciples, doesn’t he? He wants us to love our enemies, do good to those who hate us, bless those who curse us, and pray for those who abuse us. Really? Is that possible? Apparently, he thinks it is. Yet, when we hear those expectations visions rise up before our eyes of people and situations we have found ourselves in that reflect the kind of treatment spoken of and we think, “He doesn’t really expect that of us. Perhaps he is speaking of ideals or hyperbolically to make a point.” No, he means what he says. But Jesus has promised that he will walk with us on the entire Way. In union with him we can do all things — even love our enemies.
