Paul tells us that God puts us in Christ, and makes our Lord Jesus our Righteousness!
God has many infinite and perfect attributes, but the only one He clothes his people with is Righteousness. God declares us Righteous for Jesus' sake, even though we do not act righteously!
God thereby judges us to be without fault, we who have trusted in Jesus.
All other religions are about finding our own righteousness in a desperate attempt to appease an angry god. But God's Word warns us that everything we do that appears to us righteous is, to God, a stench and repugnant to Him. We cannot be perfect, for we are sinners, but God's righteousness is without a single flaw at all.
Jesus warned us that our righteousness would need to be better than any earthly righteousness in order for us to escape judgment and death.
God revealed in the Old Testament that He would transfer His righteousness to His people by His Messiah. Indeed, one of His names is, the LORD our Righteousness! Instead of our own puny efforts at righteousness, the promise of old is that Jesus will be our Righteousness.
Jesus warned against self-righteousness, that it was no good, and that it could never rescue us from judgment. He also taught that if a sinner brings only his sins before God and cries out for mercy, God sends that man home justified, that is, declared to be without fault at all!
God promises to clothe His people with a robe of righteousness, which is our salvation.
The Apostles strongly denounced reliance upon a personal righteousness, and urged God's people to lay hold of the Righteousness of the Lord Jesus.
Those who trust in their own righteousness have rejected God's.
