Though David is often a type of the Lord Jesus, there are many contrasts between David and Christ that reveal our King of Glory as far Better than David.
The incident of David's numbering of the people, and God's judgment for it, point to a crucial difference between David and the Savior.
The incident shows how God deals with His people through their annointed head. God was angry with Israel, and He moved David to commit this public sin so that He might judge all Israel.
So Israel was judged because of the conduct of its ruler, yet its own conduct deserved judgment also.
We see in today's life so often that nations are judged because of their rulers' wickedness and foolishness.
But David's worse wrong was in shifting the judgment from himself onto his people. Rather than flee before his enemies for three months, he requested God's wrath against all the people for three days. In this he reminds us of Adam, who tried to shift the blame for his sin onto his wife Eve.
David finally saw the evil of his choice and begged the Lord for mercy for Israel.
In all this, David is the obverse of the Lord Jesus. Christ represents His people, and we are judged based upon His conduct, which is righteous and pleasing to God. Indeed, His righteousness is imputed to His people, because He is our federal head.
Further, Christ intervenes to shift the blame from His people onto Himself! He was punished for our sins at Calvary.
Whoever heard of a Prince suffering to save his people? Yet our Prince did just that! He is the King who died to save His people!
It is His eternal Glory that He did so, and by His selflessness for us He has forever won our hearts.
