Believers are called to holiness--that is without dispute. But too often we let our own desires and lusts control our decisions and actions rather than living by God's Word. When Peter uses the word "lusts" in 1 Peter 1:14, he is referring to much more than the temptation toward immorality. The word lusts means the natural desires of our human bodies. Here, as it is elsewhere in the New Testament, the warning to not be controlled by our lusts teaches that every part of our life should be governed and directed by something other than our feelings, what we see, or even our own self-esteem. And that something that should be our guide is nothing other than God's Word. Every part of our lives as believers is to be yielded to the control of God's Spirit and the authority of His Word, rather than being subject to our own desires or choice.
