After the Babylonians take Jehoiachin away, Zedekiah was made king—the last king. And like his brothers and nephew, he was a wicked man. Rather than listen to Jeremiah, he allowed a false prophet to tickle his ears with notions of freedom and a promise of the restoration of articles to the temple. And at first, it looked like the prophecies were true as the Babylonians withdrew to deal with Egypt, but they soon returned.
This time they finished the job and burnt Jerusalem, the palace, and the temple. King Nebuchadnezzar's army caught King Zedekiah after he fled in the middle of the night. They executed his sons before his eyes and then gouged out his eyes.
In the middle of Zedekiah's reign, Jeremiah wrote to the captives in Babylon, urging them to seek the Lord while going about their daily calling of building, planting, marrying, and having children. Why? Because they are going to be there a long time—70 years.
