This chapter uses the word "world" 18 times. Often, the word 'world' is used in stark contrast to the Christian and a few times it simply represents the created world itself (vv. 5, 25).

II. We are not of the world (vv. 14, 16, ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου). A. Notice Christ’s description. He says that his disciples are “not of the world” — that is the way He views His disciples. They were chosen out of it and are characterized as not being “of the world.” B. This is the way we must see ourselves. It is not that we are socially awkward, odd personality, relationally dysfunctional, etc. Not the same thing.
