In Thesis #52 in the 95 Theses Martin Luther wrote these words, "The true treasury of the Church is the most holy Gospel of the glory and grace of God." This is a fitting summary of 2 Tim. 1:8-10 where Paul presents a summary of the content of the gospel message, the "pattern of sound words," "the good deposit," that he has been proclaiming and suffering for. This gospel summary is given in several other places in the pastoral epistles which are referred to in this sermon. The salvation God secures for his people through the person and work of his Son is totally effective to save them because the initiative and work is totally founded in the grace and purpose of God from before the creation of the universe. Paul is charging Timothy to share with him in the proclamation and in the suffering for this great treasure which delivers God's people from the power of death and grants eternal life.
