In light of Classis' decision regarding Article 67 and the consistory's decision regarding Prayer Day, Rev. Lanning will speak on the topic of special worship services.
Below is transcribed said decision of Classis. 1/14/22 Committee of Pre-Advice re: the Overture from Second RPC and the letter from Cornerstone RPC regarding Minute Art. 32 of the 9/14/21 Meeting of Classis
Recommendation #1 regarding the letter of Cornerstone RPC to Classis:
The letter of concern, including the three questions, raised by Cornerstone RPC in their letter to Classis was addressed by the decision to sustain the protest of Second RPC.
Recommendation #2 regarding the Protest from Second RPC:
That classis adopt the overture of Second RPC to amend Church Order Article 67 as follows: "The churches shall keep Sunday holy as required in the 4th commandment. Whether they shall observe any other days shall be left to the freedom of the churches."
Grounds: 1. The days are not required by the Word of God. By this, we are not applying the regulative principle to forbid the observance of these days, but are rather recognizing the freedom our churches should have regarding the observance of special days. The Word of God requires Sunday observance; every other observance belongs to the freedom of the churches.
2. The Reformed churches in principle have never been in favor of special days, but observed them only as an accommodation and in an attempt at the redemption of profitless idleness
3. There is the distinct and real danger that the days become bondage so that the thinking becomes that if a worship service is not observed on those days the churches are sinning or are less holy.
