In Matthew 4:19 Jesus said to His disciples, “Follow me, and I will make you [to become] fishers of men.” From this verse we may conclude two things:
1) If we are not regularly “fishing for men,” we are not truly following Christ. 2) If we would become an effective “fisher of men,” we must learn from Jesus how to win souls.
Let us honestly face our fears about this important matter and not be part of the 95% or more of professing Christians who never share the Gospel over the course of an entire lifetime! Let us seriously study the way Christ witnessed for the purpose of following His example. We will study these encounters in chronological order.
The immediate response of Nicodemus to Christ's witness was not positive. But evidently he did eventually come to faith in Christ (see John 7:50; 19:38,39). Let us be willing to sow the seed of the Gospel and water it with our tears and prayers, leaving the results with God. He alone can regenerate. It is our responsibility to confront people in their sin, explain the Gospel, and insist upon the new birth.
