This Sermon concludes the topic of church governance in light of the nomination of men to occupy the offices of elders and deacons.
The sermon covers: I. Origins of the word "Deacon" - the word appears in Esther 2:2, 6:3 and 6:5 to describe King Ahasuerus. Translation of the Hebrew word "nah'ar" which is translated elsewhere as - "boy, lad, servant, youth" See Acts 6:1-4 II. Deacons, like Elders, ought to be exemplary Christians: a. Men of dignity:"reverent" b. Not double tongued c. Not addicted to much wine - The prohibition lies on the abuse and not on the use of alcohol. d. Not fond of sordid gain. Not covetous e. Holding to the mystery, the revelation, of faith with a clean conscience
The deacons must be men who know Christ and understand the Gospel.
III. Three Necessary Traits of Deacons for their work. a. Humble in their demeanor - True deacons do not covet men's recognition - Eph 4:1-2, comp Col 3:12 b. Their Humility makes them aggressive servants John 13/Acts 28:1-3 Paul in Malta c. Assertive in judgment - Acts 6:3 - men of discrenment and maturity
IV - Their Commendation Deacons must be examined and proven worthy first, this is what the apostle required of the congregation in Jerusalem before they were called.
These qualities should adorn all Christians, whether they bear office in the church or not. Every disciple of Jesus is called to be a "deacon". John 12:25-26
