Aim: To marvel at and praise the just Judge who saves (some) sinners.
Doctrine: Gospel grace does not nullify, but rather amplifies God's righteous judgment of sin. This is a battle of kingdoms, and a war of words.
Exegesis: The inherent knowledge of every regenerate churchman: that unrepentant sinners are not (yet) joined to Christ (v. 5); that the world lies about the truth of God (and His condemnation of sin) (v. 6); that true believers are not to cavort with deceivers, idolaters, and adulterers (v. 7).
Further application: How the church is to think about God's judgment: know that it falls on all sin, and, yet, be grateful that Jesus bore it for all those who savingly believe.
Key verse: v. 5 ''For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.''
