The Holy Spirit compelled Jesus to go into the wilderness for a time of testing and suffering which had cosmic redemptive significance: where Israel in the wilderness had failed to trust God for food and had murmured, Jesus held on to trust in God in spite of Satan's effort to derail him. In the second temptation, Satan tried to get Jesus to manipulate God, but Jesus refused. In the third temptation, Satan tried to get Jesus to fall down and worship him: 'Come on, Jesus, just once, only once, bow your knee to me and look what you'll get." Through his excruciatingly fierce testing Jesus combatted and overcame the full force of evil by faith in and obedience to the Father. Because Christ resisted temptation and was faithful to God, he can give us help in our times of testing.
