At the Lord's Table, we focus on the love of Christ for His people. It is displayed by the very elements of the feast, which portray His body riven for us at Calvary, and His blood poured out to make atonement.
But let us not forget to recall, at this feast, the love displayed by the Father for us!
The Scriptures record God's acknowledgment of the affection and protection of a father for his obedient son. God told Abraham that He well knew his love for Isaac, but to sacrifice him at Mount Moriah.
God describes in Malachi 3:17 how He knows that a father spares his obedient son from danger.
That is why it is so astounding that God spared not His Only Begotten Son, Whom He loved so dearly!
It must have taken a love beyond a normal father's love for his son for God the Father to deliver up His beloved Son to save His adopted sons! He handed over the Lord Jesus, Who had never disobeyed or displeased Him in any way, to rescue a host of rebellious, foolish, ignorant, disobedient creatures whom He intended to bring into His family as Sons by adoption!
Scripture tells us that we know of the Father's love for us in the display of His offering up His Son as a sacrifice in our place.
Therefore, the Lord's Table is a picture of God the Father's love for us. Let us never forget that love when we partake of Christ's feast.
Indeed, the Father's love for us, as extreme as it must be, makes us a part of the Father's love for Christ. We are all wrapped up together, His only begotten Son and His adopted sons, in the Father's love.
And because we are clothed in Christ's obedience and blood, we are perfectly fit to come into the presence of God in Glory!
