There is a problem which many truly born again Christians struggle with, but few would dare to admit. The problem is that, though they are trusting in Christ and His finished work on the cross alone for their salvation, they are plagued with many a doubt about the reality of their own conversion. Others around them can smell the sweet fragrance of the fruit of love for Christ and love for the saints in their lives, but when they look within themselves they cannot. Therefore, they go about mourning their spiritual condition, rarely experiencing confidence before God, for their own hearts condemn them. In this series of messages the healing balm of the gospel of Jesus Christ is applied to these dear fainthearted believers in Christ. From the first epistle of John, a letter about assurance, we learn that there were those among John's hearers who struggled with the same problem. To these suffering souls John gives a clear message of hope and encouragement: if your heart condemns you, your God is far greater than your heart, and knows all things!
