The Spirit of God directed Paul, the apostle writing this letter to begin the first section with an elaboration of the Gospel by drawing attention to sin, God's wrath against sin, and man's rebellion.
He strongly makes the point that lack of knowledge is not an excuse for any person concerning their sin and guilt before God whom they know. It is the suppression of the truth and unwillingness to acknowledge God, as God, that leaves them dead in their sin. Sin locks every person out of touch with reality as demonstrated by their refusal to show honor and give thanks to God.
Being created in the image of God, to worship Him, the unbeliever in their suppression of what they know about God, creates a god to their own liking who will accept them and their sin, as they are. With the rejection of God and elevation of their own self the moral condition of man deteriorates drastically as the power of sin controls and corrupts with little, if any self-restraint.
