Peter and John had healed the lame man and preached the Gospel while at the temple. They proclaimed that the good work and power source for the healing was not in them, but was being done in the Name of the One whom the Jews had crucified and God had raised from the dead.
A large group had gathered to listen greatly disturbing the Jewish leaders. They arrested Peter and John but the Word of God had already gone forth in great power. Once again its dual impact was evident as the leaders where hardened and many in the multitude were softened as they heard and believed the message of God's salvation.
The healing of the man physically was a picture of the spiritual healing Jesus can do for any who will repent of their sin and believe in Him as their only Lord and Savior. Jesus Christ is exclusively the one who provides salvation. In this account being studied, God used His Word to harden hearts as He allowed their rejection to heighten which in turn intensified the building persecution of believers in the early church in Jerusalem. The same Spirit of God that empowered the Apostles to preach boldly even in the face of growing opposition, empowers us today to share the same lifesaving message that there is salvation – in no other Name, in no One else other than the Lord Jesus Christ.
