In the evening sermon we go back to the book of Proverbs to 23.13, 14 to direct our understanding of the Heidelberg Catechism Lord's 40 - the sixth commandment. In this sermon we see that our culture has rejected the use of deterrent to prevent murder and mayhem. Deterrents - the threat and promise of various sorts of punishment - should cause people to pause and turn away from criminal, sinful behavior. But let's make this more personal...do you (or did you) spank your children? "Spare the rod and spoil the child." The use of the 'rod of correction' (spanking) is biblical and necessary. We will see why Christian parents must NOT be too lenient in administering discipline. If we use loving punishment we will prevent our children from committing acts of mayhem or murder when they get older. We wish our society would re-learn this ancient truth ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Proverbs 23.13, 14 The Rod of Correction is Anti-Murder Heidelberg Catechism Lord's day 40
