In David's determination to reward Barzillai upon His glorious return to Jerusalem, there is a foretaste of Christ's reward which He has purposed to give to all those who trust in Him.
David sought to entertain Barzillai at his own table in Jerusalem, but Barzillai was too old and infirm to enjoy it, so he designated his son Chimham to receive the reward in his place.
But our Savior has no such limitation - for He will fit all the Saints with glorified bodies like unto His glorious body, that we may enjoy His goodness to us forever!
Christ promised His disciples that they would eat at His table and be given thrones in His Kingdom. Revelation 19 foretells the great Marriage Feast of the Lamb to which all Believers are invited.
We already sit at Christ's table when we gather around the Lord's Table. He meets with us there, and He feeds us spiritual food, His very body and blood, represented in the elements He has ordained. For the Lord's Table symbolizes how the very life and hope and eternal destiny of us all is provided for by the body and blood of our Redeemer broken and shed for us at Calvary!
We celebrate a wonderful gift already received - forgiveness, pardon, and cleansing.
Like David, our Lord Jesus has a heart's desire to feast with us in His Father's kingdom. That is why He stated that He would drink the celebratory wine with us all anew in Glory! He longs to feed us at His table.
Unlike Barzillai, we have done nothing to deserve such consideration. Indeed, we have only brought with us our rebellion and sin and shame.
Our Lord Jesus appoints to us such glory and blessing because His Father gave us to Him, and He loves us.
