Cromwell was the major figure, at least politically, in the attempt to preserve the legacy of the English Reformation. Rising from relative obscurity to the place of prominence in the Civil War against the forces of King Charles I, Cromwell trained an unusual fighting force and led the Parlimentary army to victory. Subsequent to the execution of the King and the failure of the Parliament to govern effectively, Cromwell became Protector and then Lord Protector and instituted reforms in English society that changed the course of English history.
