“Blessed are those who bring peace where peace does not exist.” The order of Matthew 5:8-9 is in the proper order of priority in that Scripture details we are to be first “pure, then peaceable” (James 3:17). The idea is that we can never be peacemakers by compromising purity or truth. Truth is the vehicle for both purity and peacemaking. The question we must ask ourselves is whether or not the context of the beatitudes refers to making peace between warring parties of human beings or if the focus of the text is upon the ministry of reconciliation of fallen humanity at enmity against God. I believe we can be confident that the latter is the focus of the text since the other beatitudes focus upon our relationship with God. This conflict is due to the fallen nature of mankind. Mankind's temporal existence is one of constant conflict.
