“God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause His face to shine upon us; Selah. That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations. ” Psalm 67:1, 2 The Psalmist begs the mercy of God. Mercy here means to stoop or bend to help an inferior. What an apt picture of God’s relationship with His people! We are the inferiors who indeed stand constantly in need of God’s condescending favor. We are far from self-sufficient, but fully in need of God’s help. We desire His blessing on our lives, on our work as individuals, families and churches. Certainly, we long for His face to shine upon us. But, why?
There are many reasons, but one is given in the passage that hopefully mirrors our hearts. We should desire God’s mercy and blessing upon us as Christians and churches, so that God’s way (His truth, gospel) would be known upon earth. It should be our fervent prayer that God would so bless our lives to be conformed to His will, our gospel to be so Spirit-empowered that God’s saving health (salvation) would be known among all nations.
Are you concerned about the spiritual needs of people around you? Do you desire and pray that the same gospel you treasure would be known and rejoiced in by others in your neighborhood or across the world? If not, then we need to repent and ask God to give us the same desire this Psalmist possessed.
