This resolution of Daily United Prayer is based on An Humble Attempt, originally put forward by Jonathan Edwards in 1748. Its design is to encourage God's people in the duty of united extraordinary prayer; setting aside some time every day to pray for the revival of His church and the advancement of Christ's kingdom in our homes, in our churches, in our nation, and in the world.
If you are able to join us in prayer today, I would encourage you to do so.
Hebrews 12:12 tells us, "lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees." This may be a reference to Moses lifting up his hands on the hill while Joshua and the armies of Israel fought the Amalekites down below. As Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed, but when he let down his hands, Amalek prevailed. It's a vivid picture given to us by the Holy Spirit of the cause-and-effect correlation between prayer and the success of the warfare that we experience "on-the-ground." And if that picture were not enough, another important lesson can be drawn from verse 12:
But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
This is the all-too-familiar problem we face as we hold up our hands in prayer day by day. Our hands grow heavy and we find our prayer lives repeatedly waxing and waning in its fervency. That's why Hebrews exhorts us to lift up the hands that hang down. And as we pray together with other believers on either side of us to "stay up our hands," like Moses, we too can have steady hands in prayer until the going down of the sun. This is not a dispensable exercise. This is not something that should be relegated to just a few "super-spiritual" Christians. Prayer is essential for victory. Do you believe that?
In verse 14, the Lord said to Moses, "Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua." And so may we remember well this story and rehearse it in the ears of all who will listen.
