One person wrote" Not working does not equal poverty". Well, we are only making it on my wife's part time job of $8,000 dollars a year. Even in Alabama, that's poverty. I've been out of full time work for almost two years. Now, everything is online. Many templates make no sense. Even when it does, it takes almost two hours to fill out the application. But, the biggest problem is when they see I'm almost 60 yrs. old, they think I'm a broken down old man that can't work. If they saw me in person, they would not think that. I still bench press 350, deadlift, 500 and squat 600 lbs. Also run a mile and a half in 15 min.
Americans not in workforce does not equal poverty.
I remember a sermon where the pastor said he did an estimate of the earning power of his membership roll, based on them NOT WORKING but receiving the minimal Social Security payment. He then estimated (dreamed) that they would give Ten Percent (Tithe) and his final number was higher than his church's current budget!
Mike and pennned, there are barter systems alive and well in many regions of the country. The problem is you have to be almost paranoid to keep things from drawing a governmental stink-eye. It only takes one busy body to take down a family who sells milk or eggs that aren't up to "government safety standards" (or the same busy body who just doesn't like their neighbor). I've seen it happen. However, where the system thrives, the people do, too! We like to "help our neighbors" and they reciprocate. It seems to keep everyone happy, for now. But, hey, I am also considered "unemployed" because I stay at home, live for my husband, raise our children and keep the household running smoothly (well, at least in theory, hahaha)!

No, it has to be sanctioned by the gov types who issue permits, generate "safety" codes, pay code enforcement people, etc. In NYS, if you barter goods, you're supposed to pay and collect sales tax. No one does, but if it could be practically enforced, it would be.

Actually, Jim, there was a loss of a half million full-time jobs in June. The only increase was in the part-time category. And what reason is there to be joyful at 6.1% unemployed(even if it were true, which it isn't) after going on 6 yrs of "recovery"?
I remember when 4.3% unemployment under Bush was called a recession by the media. Funny how the "national standards" can change.
Jim Lincoln wrote: Apparently who you are asking your glass is either half empty or half full? Hiring Is Strong and Jobless Rate Declines to 6.1%. The stock markets around the world were happy with it. Those other unemployed are just Republicans living off their stock dividends.
Let me get this right, work force participation is at a 36 year low. 92 million fewer Americans are working than when the president took office (and he has the audacity to use the term job creation) and you and the NYT think this is good news??? You don't see a huge contradiction between unemployment going down and people not working going up?? Maybe they are manipulating the figures?
Wait, I know what it is. All the bad news is due to previous administration. Curse you George W Bush for all the bad things you still make happen today despite being out of office for 5 years and 122 days.
