Israeli lacrosse team to forfeit game rather than play on Sabbath

Team Israel has a date with Canada, and now — officially — a date with its conscience.

The women’s lacrosse team from Israel beat New Zealand 12-9 on Wednesday to guarantee themselves a spot in the top eight at the World Cup in Oshawa. Not bad for a team that didn’t exist the last time the World Cup was a played.

The 5-1 Israelis get second-seeded Canada (3-1) in the playoff round Thursday.

But win or lose Thursday and Friday, they put themselves in the top-eight bracket that has games set for Saturday — the Sabbath. The team has vowed not to break with Israel’s traditions and will forfeit their game on the Sabbath (or Shabbat) because it is a sacred day of rest. ...

Refton, where has the day been changed ? And how can you call Sunday the seventh day ? Sabbath is the seventh day and the first day of the week follows which we call Sunday.

Well Jim, I finally got around to listening to Gil's message on "Shadow and Substance", and I must say I found it most helpful.

Now all I have to do is separate Israel and Church......

So the industrial/corporate work week determines God's sabbath. Interesting. If we're going to let man decide, have a look at your calendar.

The Shabbat has always been Saturday.
I might have known a four fifths Christian with one part Arminian doesn't obey the Lord and His command to keep the Sabbath.

The Sabbath was instituted from the Beginning and is of Perpetual 0bligation.

"This may be inferred from the nature and design of the institution. It is a generally recognized principle, that those commands of the Old Testament which were addressed to the Jews as Jews and were rounded on their peculiar circumstances and relations, passed away when the Mosaic economy was abolished; but those rounded on the immutable nature of God, or upon the permanent relations of men, are of permanent obligation. There are many such commands which bind men as men; fathers as fathers; children as children; and neighbors as neighbors. It is perfectly apparent that the fourth commandment belongs to this latter class. It is important for all men to know that God created the world, and therefore is an extramundane personal being, infinite in all his perfections. All men need to be arrested in their worldly career, and called upon to pause and to turn their thoughts Godward. It is of incalculable importance that men should have time and opportunity for religious instruction" (C.Hodge)

Refton, I really had a lengthy response, but not comfortable wasting the time of the fine people here defending myself against a baseless accusation. John 1:17 reads the law came by Moses, you make far too many assumptions to make your point stand. You more than likely did not visit the website I suggested. I don't see you rightly dividing the Word of truth, you don't see me rightly dividing the Word of truth. Not sure the continued discussion would be profitable. You may obviously respond as you see fit. Still wish God's richest blessing to you.

God gave Abraham, Noah, Patriarchs the complete wherewithal to worship and to serve HIM in exactly the same way which HE required of all His people (OT) as we now have recorded in Scripture. God does not change. HIS ways are perfect.

Note:- Ex 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Genesis 26:5 remains extant with quote, "MY" voice, "MY" commandments, "MY" statutes, "MY" laws.

Refton, I am glad we both believe that God is not incompetent. You can say you believe Noah taught his family to honor the Sabbath the problem you run into is you have no proof.

Gentleman, the burden of proof is not with me. Take the verse in Revelation, it states that the redeemed kept the commandments of God, but you find no command to keep it until after the exodus. Sanctifying or setting apart the Sabbath is not the same as a commandment to keep it. You assume that that God commanded people to keep the Sabbath before He said that the keeping of it was a sign between Him and Israel.(twice in Exodus 31 and once in Ezekiel 20) I chose not to add to God's words. I find an excellent consideration of this at the following website.

http://www.letusreason.org/7thAd13.htm

I really have no expectation that someone such as myself will have an effect on how y'all view this matter. We would all do well to heed Colossians 2:16,17 "So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ" (NKJV)

I believe God is not incompetent.
I believe God's people obeyed and worshipped Him in the form HE has commanded in His Word and law from the beginning..
I believe Noah would have taught his family the revealed method of worship and duty including Sabbath - AND God would not have changed this later in Egypt since HE established it from the beginning.
I believe Melchizedek would have taught them the Word of the Lord as HE has recorded it in His Book the Bible from the beginning.

God established and provided the Sabbath from the days of creation and has commanded it to be kept and that is ordained since the first created week.
Nothing has changed except the day (called Sunday now) and even that is still the seventh.

Why do you want me to show you that the sabbath was kept by others apart from the Lord before the Exodus. Is the fact that He blessed, sanctified and kept it himself not good enough for you.
We do know the Ancients had weeks, months and years agreed there is no account of them keeping a sabbath but its quite a jump to say definitively that they didn't keep it or know about it. What are your thoughts on Rev 14:12 ? What commandments do you think that John is talking about. And also Isaiah 66:23 Is this the same sabbath from Genesis 1 to be honoured

Please list the commandments, statutes and laws which the Lord refers to here.
Ahhh, you have not answered MY question. Yet I will tell you that all I know of what the Bible tells us God said to Abraham, i.e. go to a land and sojourn, offer Isaac, circumcise men. We gather that Abraham was given a pattern for an altar as he built one, we can tell he offered sacrifices, because Isaac didn't say what are we doing dad, but where is the sacrifice. So, it is obvious there are things that God told Abraham that we don't have given to us in Holy Scripture. Obviously Romans 4 let us know it was NOT the 10 commandments or the law given to Moses. So back to my question, show me ANYWHERE in Genesis past chapter one, where Adam, Seth, Noah, Enoch, etc. observed or were commanded to obey the Sabbath. The first time you see the word is AFTER the children of Israel left Egypt and again God Almighty said 3x it was a sign between Him and Israel. There remains a Sabbath for us, a future not present tense statement.

I would point out that Moses was transcriber for the Pentateuch, so perhaps Abram followed some of those laws as the Clarke commentary pointed out:
Clarke wrote:
Genesis 26:5:
Verse 5. Abraham obeyed my voice] meimeri, my WORD.
See Ge 15:1.

My charge] misitmarti, from shamar, he
kept, observed, ordinances or appointments of God. These
were always of two kinds: 1. Such as tended to promote moral
improvement, the increase of piety, the improvement of the age,
typical of the promised seed, and the
salvation which was to come by him. For commandments, statutes,
Le 16:15,

I would suggest you read, Does God Have a Future for Israel?: A Study of Romans 11 and Christian Zionists: The Real Terrorists.

Hmm
Gil Rugh said or, wrote:
Two things are characteristic of a maturing believer as Paul talks about. He loves the Word and he loathes sin. Delights in God's Word and he hates sin. You know what we've seen in our day among those who profess to be a believer? A growing indifference to the study of the Word of God, to indepth consideration of the truth. We have a growing tolerance of sin, an acceptance of it. You talk to Christians today about inconsistencies in their life and what do they say, Nobody's perfect. Let him who is without sin cast the first stone. What do we say? I can live with a little sin in my life. Paul says I never can. It never becomes acceptable. Do you have that sensitivity to sin? Praise God. Don't do anything to dull it. The more you delight in His Word, the more you will hate the sin that is so contrary to His Word.

I am thinking that at least twice if not 3x (i.e. Exodus 31:13) God calls the Sabbath a sign between Himself and the the nation of Israel. Show me where in Scripture that the Sabbath was kept before the exodus from Egypt other than God choosing to rest from His creating. Where is Job, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, et al said to keep the Sabbath?
