Winning High School Runner Disqualified for…Giving Thanks to God?

Last weekend, Columbus High School Mighty Cardinals (Columbus, Texas) team member Derrick Hayes was preparing for sweet victory — but, despite his win, the excitement was ripped away after he was disqualified for making an apparently unacceptable gesture.

His offense? His father, KC Hayes, claims that Derrick was punished for offering up a simple praise to God while crossing the finish line. WFAA-TV has more:

What I can't understand is who gave them the right to be right! Who are they to tell people what they can and can not do. Just because they don't believe the way christians do, what gives them the right to take away the way we want to praise our God! We don't tell them how to praise their .....what ever they believe in....one day they will wished they had.

I don't know that this would necessarily qualify as an attack on Christianity by the governing body. I think ALL the rules about so called excessive celebration should be done away with. You hit a home run or score a goal or get a touchdown, and you're not supposed to be excited about it???? It is part of the game, we live in a world where some win and some lose, we cannot guarantee equality of outcome or competition ceases to exist and people stop striving to be their best. (I Corinthians 9:24-27)
It's interesting that Christians winning a race would seek to give thanks and give God glory for the victory. And so do Moslems who kneel down straightway with their head to the ground in a typical Moslem praying position. I wonder if a Moslem had won and done that, he would have been disqualified?

This kind of insanity is really getting ridiculous. That kid was disqualified for pointing up to the sky to give thanks to God? This country really is going to Hell in a handbasket.

Oh, give me a break...this can't possibly be true, can it? Sports figures, and most others in compepitive sports do the same thing. This school also has the other usual sports and you can't tell me that there are not many throughout who don't do the very same thing. I don't know because I just see way too many people doing the same without repercussion until now...hmmm.
